This chocolate bar is made from organic cacao from Panama (for the chocolate liquor) and Dominican Republic and Peru (for the cocoa butter), organic sugar from Paraguay, and organic vanilla from Madagascar, all grown by small farmer co-ops. When farmers organize into co-ops they gain crucial market access, run their business democratically, and decide together how to invest in their communities. Founded in 1952, COCABO was the first agricultural co-operative established in Panama. Through their care of the land, the co-op plays a critical role in preserving local ecosystems and the nearby Amistad Forest Reserve.
