2026 Holiday Sales Manager
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Handspoken is seeking a part-time Assistant Sales Manager to support the merchandising and sales of goods for their Haymarket store during the 2026 Holiday Season. This role combines direct volunteer leadership, customer service, and ecommerce admin with retail management responsibilities.
The Sales Manager collaborates with the Director to carry out the day-to-day operations of the store such as selling fair trade products, supervising staff, visual merchandising and maintaining daily financial records. This also includes training in many management aspects so that the Sales Manager can step into the Director’s role in case of a planned or an unplanned absence.
This is a temporary, part-time position, averaging 20 hours per week. The position will run from the date of hiring through the completion of the annual inventory count in January 2027. While there is an opportunity for the job to extend beyond January 2027, applicants should anticipate the position to end on January 31, 2027.
The primary roles of this position are:
- Provide excellent customer service and sales leadership in the store.
- Manage the timely and accurate creation of item SKUs in Shopify and their addition to the store’s ecommerce website.
- Accurately input and receive orders
- Assist the Store Director in effectively carrying out the day-to-day operations of the store, supervising volunteers, and executing visual merchandising standards.
- In the absence of the Store Director, assume responsibility for overseeing all aspects of the day-to-day operations.
DUTIES:
Sales – 50%
- Show the customers that they are the top priority at Handspoken. Model the components of excellent customer service and train all volunteers to do the same.
- Develop a thorough knowledge of the mission of Handspoken, the products sold in the shop, and the artisans who have made them; share educational materials with volunteers and shoppers.
- Assist in special events as delegated by the Director and Outreach Manager.
- Contribute to the overall sales growth of the store through excellent customer service.
- Maintain awareness and control of loss prevention through attentive customer service.
Store Operations – 30%
- Collaborate with volunteers to execute projects and provide customer service. Maintain good relations and job satisfaction with volunteers.
- Assist in the daily operation of the store and provide support for the merchandising and sales of goods for the store.
- Act as supervisor when the Director has the day off or has responsibilities outside the store. This includes opening and closing the store, handling sales and customer service, maintaining displays, and making bank deposits.
- Maintain attractive, well-organized office and customer areas within the store.
- Manage in the creation of SKUs within Shopify system and facilitate their speedy update to the store’s ecommerce website.
- Accurately manage inventory through order check in, receiving, and adjusting processes.
- Understand store operations/POS systems and inventory processes and bookkeeping requirements for all sales (taxes, sales reporting, inventory reporting/management).
- Perform duties as assigned by the Director.
Staffing – 10%
- Support the Director and Volunteer Coordinator in training volunteer staff.
Store Promotions – 10%
- Assist and work collaboratively with other staff, volunteers, and Board members to conduct fun, educational, and engaging events in the store.
Qualifications
- Self-motivated, outgoing, energetic and enjoys working with people
- 2 years of experience in retail and/or customer service
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and social media platforms.
- Ability to balance administrative tasks with direct customer service responsibilities.
- Commitment to Fair Trade and the mission of Handspoken.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and move on the sales floor for extended periods of time.
- Ability to bend, reach, and lift up to 25 lbs (using appropriate equipment and safety techniques).
Schedule & Hours: This is a part-time, non-exempt position (20 hours/week). Must be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, according to store needs. Store hours are:
- Monday–Thursday: 10:00 am – 6:00 pm
- Friday: 10:00 am – 8:00 pm
- Saturday: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
- Sunday: 11:00 am – 5:00 pm
Pay & Benefits
- $20/hour, eligible for overtime
