What Is Global Mamas?
Global Mamas is a fair trade nonprofit that partners with women artisans in Ghana to create ethically made clothing, accessories, and home goods. Their work provides sustainable income and opportunities for women to support themselves, their families, and their communities.
Through fair wages and safe working conditions, Global Mamas empowers artisans to grow independent businesses while preserving traditional craftsmanship.
The Craft Behind the Collection
Batik: A Story Told in Wax and Dye
Many Global Mamas pieces begin with batik, a traditional textile art form that uses wax and dye to create intricate patterns.
Artisans start by hand-drawing or stamping designs onto fabric using hot wax. The cloth is then dyed, and the wax resists the color—meaning wherever the wax sits, the original fabric color remains. This process can be repeated multiple times to build layers of color and detail.
Because each step is done by hand, no two pieces are exactly alike. Every pattern carries the mark of the artisan who created it.
Once the fabric is complete, it’s transformed into clothing through skilled, small-scale production.
Artisans carefully cut patterns, sew each piece, and assemble garments by hand. This process supports local makers at every step—from textile creation to final construction—ensuring quality while maintaining ethical production practices.
